During covid I binge watched a show on Youtube called "Small budget, Big makeover" and was inspired by the ingenuinity and the simple solutions that solve big problem at a pocket friendly budget. Here is the brief story of one of the episodes that resonated.

When Kirti and her family; her husband, three spirited children , moved into their own 2 BHK after 16 relocations, they hoped the chaos would end. But unpacking revealed familiar problems:

  • No dedicated study space: One corner table for three turned every homework session into a wrestling match.
  • Cluttered storage: Books and toys spilled across the floor with nowhere neat to go.
  • Cramped sleeping arrangements: A single bed sparked nightly arguments and restless nights.
  • A mother’s lost spark: Kirti, once passionate about decorating, had grown weary of constantly revamping temporary homes.

Listening with Heart to Every Family Member

The first step was understanding the family’s real needs:

“I build crafts, but I end up kicked off the bed and my toys clutter the floor.”
“I want a private corner to practice Bharatnatyam, not just the balcony.”
“I need space to spread out my books without them toppling over.”
“If my children are happy, I’ll be happy—my creative spark has faded after 16 moves.”

That simple, heartfelt plea—“Help us feel at home again”—became the blueprint.

₹20,000 and Three Days: How the Vision Came Together

Three Beds in One

Challenge: Fit sleeping space for three in a low-ceiling room.
Designer's role: Curated a local carpenter’s fold-out platform design—one sleek bed by day, three beds by night.
Result: A seamless transformation that reclaimed floor space and restored peaceful nights.

The Honeycomb Accent Wall

Challenge: Inject personality cost-effectively.
Designer's role: Sourced affordable plywood panels and paint, then guided a local artisan to create a pastel honeycomb mural.
Result: A playful backdrop that sparked creativity and doubled as a geometry lesson for the kids.

Defining Living & Learning Zones

Challenge: Combine TV lounge, dining area, and Kirti’s home-tuition space without visual chaos.
Designer's role: Recommended repositioning the sofa by the window, installing a decorative screen in front of the washbasin area, and selecting a striped accent wall paint.
Result: Distinct zones emerged effortlessly—guests see a proper lounge, students focus in a private study corner, and the home breathes again.

The Big Reveal: Raw, Real Reactions

On reveal day, the Mishra family walked into their reborn home:

Dev bounced on his own bed: “Now I can build forts without fighting!”

Diva twirled by her dance corner: “My very own Bharatnatyam stage!”

Kirti whispered, tears glistening: “You’ve restored my love for this house.”

Mr. Mishra beamed at the new layout: “Finally, a home that feels like ours.”

Their unanimous verdict? “Ghar ho toh aisa!” (“A home should be like this!”)
